English

At Winslow Church of England School our approach to the teaching of English embodies our school vision: ‘let your light shine’ through a high quality, rigorous curriculum, where pupils are encouraged and supported become successful and confident readers and writers. We strive to foster a life-long love of language, literature and communication in our pupils, so they leave us with a strong command of both the spoken and written word, underpinned by a passion for and appreciation of a wide variety of texts.

Throughout their primary school journey, our children will have access to a rich and diverse range of texts to support and develop their English skills across the curriculum. In an ever-changing society, we recognise the need to nurture and develop children’s use of Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary to support their spoken and written skills so they leave us as well-rounded, inquisitive individuals, curious about the world around us.

When our children leave Winslow, we expect them to be avid readers. We have a rigorous and well-organised English curriculum that provides many purposeful opportunities for reading, writing and discussion.

Through our rich and varied English curriculum, we aim to inspire and excite our children and foster a thirst for writing to enable them to express themselves with ease and enjoyment as they prepare for their lives beyond the primary school.
